Cartography

One of my distinct interests in art has always been in cartography. In addition to the local, small-scale axonometry drawings, I love creating maps of regions, continents, or planets. When it comes to gamedev, I found it especially useful for level design. I can quickly sketch out areas and iterate on the designs. When prototyping in-engine, the process is even more efficient and I can apply proper scale to my maps.

Moreover, I can apply critical thinking to natural looking coastlines and borders, urban layouts, underlying geological processes etc. I am also fascinated by mazes and have created a number of these in my sketches, maps, as well as built in Minecraft.

My cartography skills can be used in game development for:

  • detailed level design
  • prototyping
  • minimaps
  • maps for players and maps in-game
  • creating a coherent world
